New, Read and All messages

A message moves out of New the moment you open it, whether or not you replied. That is worth knowing, because it means New is a list of things you have not seen rather than things you have not answered. If you open one on a phone and mean to reply later, it will not be in New when you come back. Read is where to look for it.
